For whom: children in group 8 to first grade.

What you come here for: Children who need extra support with the transition from group 8 to first grade.

Coach4you Woerden is one of two independent volunteer organizations that fall under the board of Stichting Gilde Woerden. At the beginning of 2018, preparations were made for the start of Coach4you.

The national project Coach4you of Gilde Nederland has set itself the goal of making the transition of students from primary education to secondary education easier. The project aims to make these children more successful and increase their chances of an uninterrupted school career and thus their chances in society.

For a child who makes the transition from primary to secondary education, this is generally a very big step. The Coach4you project focuses on children who (can) receive too little support from their parents and who need extra guidance to make that transition successfully. This occurs in situations in which the parents do not have sufficient command of the Dutch language and/or do not know the education system. In short, if parents do not know how to stimulate and guide their child in finding a suitable learning path.
The project is also for children from families with little structure or for children with concentration problems. Or a child who is not very resilient, very quiet, afraid or insecure; dyslexic, gifted, hyperactive or mildly autistic or the like. Usually these children are not covered by professional assistance, but they do need extra support. The commitment and positive attention of a voluntary coach in this regard is intended to prevent such
at-risk pupils from group eight of primary school drop out early in secondary education.

The support of the first graders is done with the help of coaches. The coach and the pupil are brought into contact with each other at the end of group 8 after the parents and the pupil have agreed to the coaching. Every student gets a coach that suits him or her. A condition for this is that the coach and the child have mutual trust in each other. Every school week for a maximum of 18 months, the coach discusses the school program in detail with his pupil in approximately one and a half hours, the problems associated with it and how they can be solved and in outline with the parent(s). The period runs from June in group 8 to December of the 2nd year of secondary education. Discussion topics can range from school affairs, arranging homework to dealing with fellow students and teachers. During the supervision there is also consultation between the coach and the mentor of the pupil.
